With Charleston being such a beautiful and historic town and the Cooper River Bridge Run's strong heritage, it's no surprise our wonderful 10k has made the list!
USA Today writer,
"What better way to kick off the spring running season than with a 10K race that will lead you across the stunning Cooper River Bridge and straight into the heart of South Carolina's oldest and arguably most charming city? Dating back to 1978, the Cooper River Bridge Run is a race rich with culture and history, much like the city it's held in. Not only is it one of the largest and most storied 10K races in America, but it's also one of the most musical. Last year organizers set up live music at every quarter-mile mark (yes, they even had bands on the bridge), making it the race with the most music per square mile in the entire country. Peyton was born September 10, 2003, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, to Jennifer and Noah Moore. He was a 4th grade student at Mount Pleasant Academy and formerly at The O’Quinn School in Mount Pleasant. He loved sports and being outdoors and was a member of The Mount Pleasant Track Club, the Charleston Running Club, Charleston Runs, and USA Track and Field. Peyton ran the Cooper River Bridge Kids run from 2005 to 2012 and then ran the Cooper River Bridge 10K in 2013. Always wanting to encourage others, he was a supporter of the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, and when running, wanted to recognize those who were supporting any event. Peyton loved chess, drawing and playing piano. Not one to sit around, Peyton was also a member of the International Juggler’s Association, the Cub Scouts, and was a strong athlete. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Redskins Championship Football Team, qualified and competed in the USA Track & Field 2012 National Junior Olympic Championship, and was the number one Javelin Thrower in the State of South Carolina for 9 and 10 year olds. And, even at his young age, he was an inspiration by serving as a running coach for adults in Couch to 5k groups, tutored other students, and was the leading scorer on his basketball team this past year. Even with all of Peyton’s love of sports from kayaking to swimming, boating to football, he also loved school and his teachers, making straight A’s and holding perfect attendance. He was recognized for the Principle’s Honor Roll each year. Peyton’s family, however, was number one! He loved to be with his grandparents on their boat, swim off their dock, run with his dad, and camping and spending hours talking with his mama about life and love.
We are honored to have Peyton Moore's artwork as the official 2014 CRBR Kids Run & Wonderfest Design! This one is for you, Peyton!
Marcus was born and raised in a military family. His father, William Terry is a retired Marine Corps officer who spent a total of 20 years in the service. Marcus was born on the Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1976 and grew up in Northern Virginia and Okinawa, Japan. Upon his father's retirement from the Marine Corps in 1991, the family moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Marcus finished High School before attending college at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he received his degree in Architecture in 1998.
Marcus now practices architecture in Charlotte with RPA Design. His focus for much of his career has been on environments for the aging population. He has designed many nursing homes around the Carolina's and has worked with The Department of Veteran's Affairs on the design of many VA Living Centers and Veteran's Homes.
Marcus enjoys doing graphic design projects as a hobby among other things. He also loves fishing, golf and is learning tennis from his wife who is a solid amateur tennis player. He hopes to be able to beat her at some point in his life. She refused to play him while she was 9 months pregnant when he felt he had his best chance.
Marcus was inspired to create this design while he was participating in the 2009 Bridge Run. The design portrays a perspective from on the bridge itself. When running on the bridge and approaching the pylons, the stay cables seem to stretch past you in all directions creating a fascinating visual pattern that draw your eye straight through the bridge itself, motivating you to power through! The colors selected were meant to reflect the bright and vibrant character of the City of Charleston and it's residents who open their arms to us year after year. Marcus is looking forward to seeing the bridge again from this rare vantage point again in April 2014.
It has been yet another incredible Cooper River Bridge Run Design Contest! First and foremost we want to thank everyone who submitted a design to the 2014 contest. We received nearly 80 entries this year, but only 1 was voted the official 37th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run Design and 1 was voted the official 2014 Kids Run & Wonderfest Design.
Drumroll please…the winner of the 2014 Cooper River Bridge Run Design Contest is…MARCUS TERRY! Marcus is a Charlotte, NC native who currently practices architecture with RPA Design. He is married to his wife, Tonya, and has two children, John, 10, and newborn daughter Amelia.
His design was inspired when he was actually running the bridge! Terry said, “When running on the bridge and approaching the pylons, the stay cables seem to stretch past you in all directions creating a fascinating visual pattern that draw your eye straight through the bridge itself, motivating you to power through! The colors selected were meant to reflect the bright and vibrant character of the City of Charleston and its residents who open their arms to us year after year.”

2014 CRBR Kids Run & Wonderfest Winning Artwork by the late Peyton Moore
This is the second year that the Kids Run & Wonderfest will have an official design. Peyton Moore’s winning design will be featured on t-shirts, posters and all distributed promotional material for the race set for Friday, April 4, 2013.
Julian Smith, Cooper River Bridge Run Race Director said, “It is an honor to have Peyton’s artwork for this year’s Kids Run and Wonderfest. His design was a favorite among the community and the judges. This young man touched so many hearts, was such a huge part of the running community, and is a true inspiration to us all…so we are dedicating this year’s Kids Run to him!”
The winners were determined in a two-step process: a “People’s Choice” voting and a private judging. This is the first year we incorporated the “People’s Choice” portion where fans casted their votes on their favorite designs which counted as 25% of the total votes. The remaining 75% of the votes were caste at a private judging by local dignitaries, community designers and past Cooper River Bridge Run Design winners.
Smith added, “We received an overwhelming contribution from the community during the People’s Choice voting – thousands and thousands of people voted which made a huge impact on the winning designs. We can’t wait to see the involvement during next year’s People’s Choice voting process.”
CONGRATULATIONS to the winners and their families! We are looking forward to all of the awesome 2014 Cooper River Bridge Run festivities already!

Last year The Music Initiative and The CRBR curated 24 bands, representing over a dozen of genres of music, that played along the 10K route. Based on the terrain and the difficulty along the course, live bands (selected based on tune, tempo, and style) serenaded runners approximately every quarter mile, resulting with more music per square mile than any other race in the country!
The Music Initiative and This Is Noteworthy, the proud music partners of the CRBR, have started planning what will be an even more awesome musical experience next year!
But if you loved the music from the 2013 run, you can purchase “Run With Me”, the official CD of the 2013 Cooper River Bridge Run at http://www.themusicinitiative.com/store/. Each band that performed along the 10K route contributed a track. Please help us support live and local music!
Official CRBR bands include: Schema, College Lounge, Irene Rose, Hibachi Heroes, Savage Tongues, Forrest Baldwin, DTSMB, Heartfelt Hinges, Heyrocco, Salem Lake, Synergy, Pierce Edens, Bad Drew Baldwin, Jefferson Coker Band, Lionz of Zion, Yellowknife, Will Hastings, The Grand Folks, Luke Cunningham, Call Momma Band, Tyler Boone.
